Valid License

International visitors can drive in Australia using a valid overseas drivers licence for the same class of vehicle. Carry your licence with you. If your licence is not in English, you must carry with you an international driving permit (IDP).

Keep Left

All Australian vehicles are right-hand drive. Remember to drive on the LEFT-hand side of the road.

Speed limits are enforced in Australia

Speed limits are strictly enforced in Australia. The speed limit is the maximum speed permitted on that road and you must not drive above the speed limit at any time. Some roads do not have visible speed limit signs, but speed limits still apply. You should be especially careful in residential areas and in school zones.

Seatbelts and child restraints

Seatbelts must always be worn when driving. All passengers in the car must also wear seatbelts. Children under age 7 must be in a child restraint appropriate for the child’s size and weight.

No mobile phones

The driver of the vehicle is not permitted to use hand-held mobile telephone while driving.

Most Australian road signs use symbols similar to those used internationally.

Fuel

Fuel (petro/gas) is available at service stations, the majority of which are open 7 days a week with many city, suburban and some larger regional centre outlets open 24 hours. Most service stations are self-services, but some do offer driveway service, especially in regional areas.

Take a break and arrive safely

It is common to travel long distances in Australia, so you should plan your journey to include several rest breaks and ensure you have enough petrol for your journey. Rest areas are located every 80-100 kilometres on main highways and roads for people to pull over and rest when tired.
