Five reasons to travel by train in Europe

Whether for the efficiency of high speed, the abundant comfort, the scenery or the attractive prices, travelling by train is a unique experience. If you haven’t decided how to travel for your next trip, we’ve put together five compelling reasons to choose the train.

City-center to city-center

Most major train stations are located in the heart of the destination city and benefit from excellent connections with other public transportation such as the underground, taxis and buses. When travelling by train, you also avoid time-consuming and inconvenient transfers, endless lines at crowded airports or the stress of driving in a different country. Instead, you reach your destination refreshed and relaxed.

Comfort

Whether your journey is long or short, comfort is always appreciated. On board, you’ll find spacious carriages with large seats and room for luggage. You can  easily take a walk through the train or socialize at the bar-buffet carriage. And while second class offers good value for the money, first class can be surprisingly affordable, so don’t hesitate to upgrade!

Unique experience

From high-speed trains offering an efficient and rapid connection between two cities to luxurious trains, to panoramic trains offering spectacular scenery, a train ride can be a destination in itself. This popular way to travel also offers the opportunity to meet the locals and learn more about their country and culture while getting tips on the best secret destinations.

Save money

Whether you go for a pass or a train ticket, you can always benefit from great deals. Tickets can be very affordable when booked in advance, while passes not only offer discounts, but also provide local bonuses. Why not stretch your budget with a night train to save on hotel costs?

Be green

It’s not just the rolling hills outside your window that are green: it’s the train itself. High-speed rail systems are more environmentally friendly than any other means of  transport.

Day and Night Trains

Choose from a wide range of trains including highspeed day trains operating at almost 200 mph/ 322 kph, scenic trains offering incredible vistas, and night trains that are budget-stretching hotels on wheels. With any of them, you’ll enjoy the ease, comfort and freedom of train travel.

Day trains

Europe train captain

High-speed trains have revolutionized travel in Europe, making cities more accessible and bringing people closer. Enjoy the efficiency of high speed and great comfort on board the most popular high-speed trains like TGV, Eurostar, Thalys, ICE, AVE, Frecciarossa, Italo and more. We can also help you book regional trains, which connect main cities to the beautiful and peaceful countryside.

Most day trains offer first- and second-class accommodations. Some highspeed trains feature business and/or executive style services as well. If you like to be pampered, upgrade to first class: enjoy the larger seats, generous legroom and on some routes, additional services such as lounge access, complimentary meal, free wireless connection and attentive staff. As opposed to air travel, first-class prices for trains can be very affordable, especially if you book in advance.

You can also choose from a wide range of schedules and destinations, including scenic trains that pass by nature’s most spectacular vistas. The most famous scenic trains in Europe include Switzerland’s Glacier Express, its GoldenPass Line, and the spectacular Bernina Express through the Alps and UNESCO World Heritage vistas.

Night trains

The best way to cover large distances is to take an overnight train. You not only save time, but also money on hotels. Plus, you’ll arrive early the next morning, well rested and ready for a big day of touring.

Most European countries have night trains, including France, Spain, Sweden, Germany and Italy. Trains listed are the most iconic, along with the Lusitania (Lisbon-Madrid), the Paris-Moscow train and the Nice-Moscow train.

FAQs

Basics of European Rail Travel

Which classes of service are offered?

Rail travel offers several, most often classified as
first or second class. In all classes, seats are large
and comfortable, with ample legroom. Treat yourself
to an upgrade to enjoy additional comforts,
delicious meals and even more services. The affordability
will surprise you, especially when compared to air travel.
Consider the advantages of each class prior to booking.

Are there discounts for Children,Youth or Seniors?

  • Children, ages four to 11 years old, usually pay
half the adult fare. Under four years of age, they
travel for free unless a reservation for a separate
    seat/berth is required.
  • Children under 16 travel free with a parent with a
Swiss Travel Pass and with a BritRail Pass a child
under 16 can travel free with an adult or senior.
Eurail and German Rail Passes allow two children
under 12 to travel free with a paying adult. Reservations
for separate seat/berths are at an additional
    cost.
  • To qualify for a youth discount of up to 50%,
travelers must be between 12 and 27 years of age.
In most cases, Youth Passes are available in first
    and second class.
  • Travellers 60 years and older are considered
seniors and can also benefit from special discounts
on certain passes. Good deals on point-to-point
tickets are available to most travellers.
IMPORTANT: Age limits vary according to the product or the
country travelled, so check before booking.

Paper tickets or e-tickets?

Paper: Your pass or train ticket is handed to you by
your travel agent or mailed to you before you leave
your country of residence. Your paper ticket has a
monetary value.
E-ticket: Your tickets can either be collected at the
station or received by email.

  • Print at Station: A reference code is sent to you for
use at a ticket vending machine before boarding
your train. There is no risk of losing your tickets
    before travelling.
  • Print at Home: Your ticket is sent to you by email
and must simply be printed from any printer
before going to the station. Once printed, your rail
    ticket is valid for travel.

What is the difference between Continuous and Flexi Passes?

When you select your pass, you can usually choose
between Continuous Passes, to travel consecutive
days during the validity of your pass, or Flexi Passes,
to travel on the (consecutive or non-consecutive) days
of your choice within the validity of your pass.

What are Saver & Twin Passes?

When two or more people travel together with a pass,
they may be entitled to a discount between 10% and
20% off the regular price.
Depending on the pass, the rules and names vary:

  • Saver (two to five people, except BritRail: three to
    nine people)
  • Twin (two people)

At the Station & On Board

How do I find my train?

It’s easy. At the train station, you’ll see large Departure
and Arrival boards located in the center of most
stations. Simply match the train number and departure
time on your reservation or ticket to the train number
on the departure board. The platform number where
you should go will be listed right next to it. Once on
the platform you’ll notice that each carriage (also
known as a coach) has a clear identification number
on its side. Your reservation/ticket will list your
carriage/coach number and your class of service.

What types of compartments or sleeping accommodations are available on overnight trains?

They vary according to the train and route. The most
common compartments are singles, doubles and
couchettes. Some offer T3, T4 and deluxe sleepers.

  • A single is a first-class compartment that contains
one bed, a private washbasin, linens and towels.
  • A double is the same as a single with two beds
    (usually bunked).
  • A couchette is a very affordable second-class
option with six bunk beds and a public washroom
    within each carriage.
  • T3 compartments contain three beds, a private
    washbasin, fresh linens and towels.
  • T4 compartments contain four beds plus the amenities
    of a T3.
  • Deluxe sleepers include a private restroom in your
    compartment.
Reservations are mandatory on all overnight trains.

What do I do with my luggage?

Storage compartments are available on all trains and
are located at the end of each carriage and/or above
the seats. Pack lightly for manageability and allow
time if you have more than one suitcase and need
to change trains. Please label your luggage to avoid
mix-ups, and note that some major train stations do
have luggage storage facilities. For groups of ten
or more, luggage handling is available for advance
purchase on select trains.

Are additional services available at the stations?

Most stations offer services such as currency
exchanges, shops, information desks, restrooms,
restaurants and more. You can unwind at Europe’s
longest champagne bar at London’s St Pancras
station. Enjoy high-end fashionista shopping at
Milan Centrale. And how about a little art infusion at
Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha train station, home to a
permanent sculpture display? You’ll also find that
many of Europe’s train stations are hubs for other
transportation like local buses and subways.
